A letter to the artists
[some thoughts on art]
[An excerpt from a post written to the attendees of a life drawing group I run here in Bellingham, Washington]
I always love the sheer variety of energies, styles, and explorations in everyone’s work.
There’s no “right or wrong” or “good or bad” when it comes to the Actual HEART of Art.
This is about creating an environment - both in the space at life drawing, as well as within each artist’s (your) mind- where it’s 10000% ok to stumble, and you will NOT be shamed for it.
The education system traumatized many of our inner creatives, pushing for comparison and shunning genuine curiosity or ingenuity that strayed outside the lines..
[ The best gift I got in middle school was when I learned to hear “weird” as a compliment : ]
Each of our stumbles is in fact music and inspiration to one another.
Art is a dance and a stumble all the way through- where discovery and the authentic, honest experience of learning to be present [and to feel safe] with one’s ever-present and intuitive creativity - the willingness to repeatedly step into and collaborate with the unknown - is the highest goal.
..
.
Anyhow.

I love your writing, Cameron! Thank you for sharing your beautiful mind with your readers. "the authentic, honest experience of learning to be present [and to feel safe] with one’s ever-present and intuitive creativity - the willingness to repeatedly step into and collaborate with the unknown". I just read your letter to my 15 year old daughter, an amazing artist- who I am hoping you will meet one day.
